what we saw from president obama was -- wait a minute, piers. what we saw once again was -- >> this is my show, young lady. moving to brent o'donnell at high speed. now, from a purely technical point of view, in the way that barack obama conducted himself in appearance last night, a few things surprised me. most of all as i was watching, i was live tweeting, this continual looking down at his notes, disengaging completely from mitt romney. i just thought it looked strange. >> yeah. you know, his body language, what told an incredible story, the way he communicated last night said more than he actually said with his mouth. maria said he looked into the camera. he was looking down at his notepad way more than he was looking into the camera and his body language basically said you know, i'm not interested in being here, i'm irritated i have to be here, i'm going to argue with the moderator for five seconds and i'm going to, you know, really just kind of check out of the debate. he was totally disengaged last night, and i think it was because he was

foreign policy than barack obama, saying obama has been weak. this is obviously a very arguable point. what would you say to that? >> i think the most interesting thing about governor romney is not just this speech but his entire foreign policy approach, is the complete absence of specifics and we even heard that from former senator coleman there so he's upset about the situation in syria. i didn't hear governor romney advocate that we intervene in syria. i happen to think that would be a mistake. in iran, all he called for was the exact sanctions that president obama is implementing. look, the president has had a very strong record. you pointed out many of the aspects of that. certainly the death of osama bin laden is the most important, but it's not just that. we've contained al qaeda by being aggressive, but at the same time, we've worked with the rest of the world to enforce sanctions on iran and yes, we are working with turkey and all those other countries, trying to deal with the situation in syria. i think the mistake governor romney make

with senator john mccain, the arizona senator and former presidential candidate joining me now. welcome to you, senator. >> thank you, piers. >> we are going to come to the debate in a moment. you've been one of the only people who debated both barack obama and mitt romney so you're in a unique place to tell me what you made of the new style romney and indeed, obama. before we get there, though, today's big news on the jobs front. whichever way you spin this from the republican side, this has to be good news not only for the president but also america, that the number's now gone down to 7.8% for the first time going below 8% in his presidency. >> well, i think that's bound to be good news but i also think you have to take it in the context that 7.8% is of course still unacceptably high but it is good news, and i think it's going to be of some help to the president. but certainly with the numbers of unemployed americans we have now, 23 million i guess it is, it's still an unacceptable situation. i think the president will concede that. >> jack welch has said today unbelievable jo

what would you be zinging president obama? >> i think this is a terrible strategy, actually, for the romney campaign. i think if you look -- if you look at the two periods recently when presidential debates shifted the polls, it was kerry in '04, he gained three or four points on bush after those debates and it was bush against gore in 2000 who gained points mostly because gore was unlikable. in neither case was there a sort of there you go again type zinger and frankly, the idea of mitt romney, mr. phony, delivering some kind of canned zinger, that's exactly the wrong strategy and i suspect this is just misdirection by the romney campaign. >> i love that ross just called mitt romney mr. phony. i'm done. thank you, ross. >> he just zinged you. very interesting. i will leave you to squabble over the "new york times" newsroom floor. thank you very much indeed. >>> tomorrow night, i sit down with arnold schwarzenegger. you watched the "60 minutes" interview but are left with unanswered questions. so was i so i asked them. arnold
